Hilux: A Hybrid Present, a Hydrogen Prototype, and the Electric Potential Unveiled
Toyota isn't just navigating the road to carbon neutrality—it's blazing multiple trails with a promise of a greener tomorrow. While hybrids and hydrogen fuel cells are on the horizon, the burning question remains: What about an electric version of its iconic powerhouse, the Hilux?
In a recent revelation, Toyota confirmed its commitment to a "multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality," leaving enthusiasts curious about the fate of the rugged Hilux. Sure, we witnessed the unveiling of the Hilux Hybrid 48V last week, but can simply grafting a mild-hybrid system onto a 2.8-liter turbocharged diesel engine truly safeguard this legendary pickup for the future?
The experimental hydrogen-fueled Hilux Prototype, showcased earlier this year, a creation nurtured at Toyota’s Burnaston factory in Derby with the backing of UK Government funding. It raises questions, but what about the possibility of a Hilux EV, ready to rival the likes of the Tesla Cybertruck, Rivian R1T, and Ford F-150 Lightning? Well, brace yourself, because it might just be in the cards.
Emmanuel Beaune, the head honcho of Toyota Motor Europe’s light commercial vehicles division, sheds light on the intrigue:
“It's really part of our multi-pathway approach, to have different powertrains and solutions. So, it's too early to comment on an electric Hilux today. There are some investigations, but I cannot say more.”
The plot thickens. These investigations undoubtedly involve the Hilux Revo BEV concept, first showcased in Thailand in December 2022. The concept has stirred excitement, but updates on the project have been scant since its debut.
Beaune offers a glimpse into the thought process:
“Today we have 30 per cent of the pickup segment in Europe, a significant chunk. Yet, we recognize that some workers are eyeing a BEV. Requests have been made, hence our collaboration with TMC (Toyota Motor Corporation) in Japan to formulate the right solution.”
Intriguing, isn't it? Toyota is not just safeguarding its legacy but is poised to electrify the very core of the pickup market. Stay tuned as the wheels of innovation turn, hinting at a future where the Hilux, an emblem of endurance, might just run on pure electric energy. The road ahead is thrilling, and Toyota seems determined to make every turn count.
